Beef with jackfruit ( chakka irachi ularthiyathu)

I love raw jackfruit to ripe one. This is a fond recipe of mine from my mother's collection. She hails from Trichur district in Kerala and the people there have a fondness for mixing tubers and vegetables with meat  and the output is awesome. Especially in the case of pork the vegetables absorb the fat and tastes yummy. Beef and jackfruit has been a favourite in the family sometimes even eaten as a snack with tea. I love the part where jackfruit seeds come in because I never would eat them if given in any other form. The distinct sweetness jackfruit has when it starts to ripen when cooked with meat makes its even more yummy that I forget jackfruit has a ripe version people find delectable. We usually cook jackfruit with beef at home, though pork is a great option too.

Ingredients for Beef with jackfruit

Raw jackfruit- 250 gm
Shallots- 100gm

Curry leaves- 1 sprog
Chilli powder- 2 tbsp
Crushed chilli- 1 tsp
Turmeric powder- 1 tsp
Oil- 3 tbsp

Directions

Clean and slice the raw jackfruit. Boil it with the seeds till half done. Pressure cook the meat till tender. In a pan heat oil and saute the minced garlic and shallots alongwith curry leaves. When they start to brown add the spices followed by the beef.

Once the beef is well cooked add the jackfruit and cook for 10 minutes. Add salt to taste and the dish is done. I love having with gruel which is a rice paste also known as Kanji. It is ideal with rotis and rice but also served as a snack in many kitchens in my mother's hometown.
