Not a favourite of mine but I wanted to prepare something different for the Lenten season since we abstained from meat during those months. So I decided to try this recipe which is shelved till 'Onam' the harvest festival of Kerala. Since it has curd as one of the ingredients we all loved it.
Velarika belongs to the cucumber family botanically but I have no idea if this curry could be replicated with the English cucumbers we use for salads. Pachidi is a term given for curries with curd.
Ingredients for Velarika Pachidi
Velarika- 1 peeled and chopped
Onion- 1 chopped
Ginger- small piece sliced
Chillies- 4 chopped
Mustard seeds- 2 tsp powdered
Curd- 500 ml
Salt- 1 tsp
Coconut ground- 1/2 a cup
Directions
Grind the coconut and mustard seeds in a coffee grinder or on the grinding stone. In a pan cook the chopped cucumber with chopped onion, ginger, chillies and the ground coconut paste.
When it is cooked well add salt and the curd. Garnish with curry leaves and mustards seeds spluttered in oil.
